 Albania from Montenegro

Albania – perhaps one of the most unique countries on the Balkan Peninsula.

Albanians do not belong to the Slavic, Romance, or Turkic peoples. The Albanian nation is considered to be the descendants of the ancient Illyrians who lived here thousands of years ago. This is reflected in their language, which forms an independent branch of the Indo-European family and has no direct relatives among modern languages. The Albanian language is one of the oldest in Europe, a direct descendant of the ancient Illyrian tongue.

Another fascinating feature of Albania is the harmonious coexistence of three religions: Islam, Orthodoxy, and Catholicism. Here, you can see mosques, Orthodox churches, and Catholic cathedrals standing side by side, symbolizing tolerance and unity.

Interestingly, Albania was one of the most isolated countries in the world during the 20th century. Under dictator Enver Hoxha, more than 170,000 bunkers were built across the country to defend against perceived threats.

Rozafa Fortress

Today, the country is opening its doors to tourists, attracting them with its warm hospitality.

The first striking highlight of our introduction to Albania will be the Illyrian fortress of Rozafa! This fortification was built in the 3rd century BC and has endured numerous raids and attacks throughout its history. The fortress was conquered by Romans, Serbs, and Ottoman Turks. Each ruler expanded and reinforced the structure, preserving its authentic appearance with echoes of different architectural styles.

From the viewing platforms atop Rozafa’s walls, a breathtaking panorama unfolds, offering stunning views of the city of Shkodër and the Bojana River. Today, the Rozafa Fortress is one of Albania’s most popular landmarks!

As part of our journey through Albania, we will visit the historic center of this ancient Illyrian city, where we can admire the facades of old houses and buildings from different eras, restored back in the 19th century.

We will stroll along Kola Idromeno Street, see the Abu Bekr Mosque and the monument to Mother Teresa, and stop by the main city fountain at Democracy Square.
