Southeastern Montenegro Trip - Excursion Route

Old Town of Bar

At the beginning of our journey, we will travel along the rugged, picturesque shores of the Adriatic Sea towards the sun-drenched city of Bar—a city of three religions, a crossroads of cultures, and the largest coastal town in Montenegro! Upon arrival, we will uncover the city's greatest secret, which is not found on the bustling shore but rather hidden away from prying eyes, nestled at the very foot of the majestic Rumija Mountain—the highest peak of the Bar Riviera. This secret is the fairy-tale fortress town of Old Bar! And we will certainly go there to immerse ourselves in the spirit of bygone centuries and admire its architectural beauty, which blends in perfect harmony with the stunning natural surroundings.

Ulcinj

Winding through the mysterious labyrinth of narrow streets in the Old Town, we will ascend to several panoramic terraces atop the fortress walls, where we’ll capture stunning photographs with Old Bar and the endless ridges of Mount Rumija as our backdrop. From there, we set off for Ulcinj—the southernmost city of Montenegro!

In ancient times, Ulcinj was known as the most infamous pirate stronghold on the Adriatic coast! Over the centuries, rulers came and went—Greek colonists from Colchis, Illyrians, Byzantines, and Romans—all leaving their unique imprint on the architecture of Old Ulcinj. For a long time, the city was part of the Ottoman Empire, and even today, its predominantly Islamic heritage is evident. As we stroll through the streets, we will see numerous mosques, both historic and modern, each showcasing the city's rich cultural legacy.

Velika Plaza Beach

According to local legend, the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes was once captured by Ottoman Turks and held prisoner in the fortress of Ulcinj. It is said that his muse was a beautiful Ulcinj woman who later inspired the character of Dulcinea in Don Quixote.

After admiring the architectural masterpieces of Bar and Ulcinj, we will set off for the longest beach in Montenegro—Velika Plaza! Travelers who have visited this place call it the “Montenegrin Ocean” and “Montenegro’s Copacabana.” Stretching endlessly along the coast, Velika Plaza boasts a gentle sea entrance and unique volcanic sand in a variety of shades. Unlike the beaches of the Budva and Bar Rivieras, this one truly resembles an ocean shoreline. And we will see it with our own eyes!

Skadar Lake

Next, we will head to Skadar Lake! But this time, we will experience it from a completely different perspective than the classic Skadar Lake tour. Our journey will take us along a scenic road that hugs the lake’s shores, offering breathtaking photo opportunities. We will stop in the small, once-traditional fishing village of Murici, where you will have the chance to swim in the turquoise-emerald waters of Skadar Lake!

Our final stop will be the historic town of Virpazar. Once a major trading port on Skadar Lake, Virpazar was a lively crossroads where caravans from the East and West met to trade goods and exchange cultures.
