Home - Popular Excursions in Montenegro - Ostrog Monastery Trip
Montenegro is not only about breathtaking nature and a rich historical heritage... Montenegro is also home to many Orthodox sanctuaries – ancient monasteries and churches with centuries-old traditions that add to the authenticity of this small yet remarkable country!
As part of the excursion program "Ostrog Monastery and the Church in Podgorica," we will visit two of the country’s main sanctuaries: the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Podgorica and the Monastery of Saint Basil of Ostrog the Wonderworker.
This is a journey to the two most famous Orthodox shrines of Montenegro, offering an immersive experience of the country’s spiritual life. It provides a deeper understanding of Orthodox churches and sacred places, allowing visitors to fully feel the energy of these holy sites and touch the most significant relics of Orthodox Christianity in Montenegro.
Ostrog Monastery is a unique site carved into the rock at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level. It is the only Orthodox shrine in the world visited by Muslims, Catholics, and followers of other faiths alike.
Our journey begins in the modern capital of Montenegro, Podgorica. Here, we will visit the country’s largest cathedral, the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, built relatively recently in 1993. This white-stone cathedral stands out with its extraordinary beauty and grandeur, holding significant importance for Orthodox Christians. The cathedral’s murals were created by artists from various countries, including Russia, Serbia, Romania, and Ukraine. The church in Podgorica has become a center of unity for Orthodox Christians, symbolizing the reconciliation and togetherness of nations in pursuit of a common noble goal.
The highlight of our excursion to Montenegro’s holy sites is undoubtedly the Monastery of Saint Basil of Ostrog the Wonderworker! This monastery, carved high into the mountain rock, resembles an impregnable fortress and is home to the relics of Saint Basil of Ostrog the Wonderworker. Ostrog Monastery is one of the most significant religious shrines in Montenegro and the Balkans, attracting believers from all over the world. Its importance is comparable to the greatest Christian sanctuaries, such as the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and Golgotha, where Jesus Christ was crucified.
Ostrog is considered the third most important Christian shrine for pilgrims. Today, it remains an active Orthodox monastery, home to 18 monks.
The monastery even has a special sacred book of miracles, documenting cases of miraculous healing. Architecturally, Ostrog Monastery is divided into the Upper and Lower monasteries. The Upper Monastery houses the Church of the Holy Cross, built in 1665, and the tiny 18th-century Presentation Church, measuring just 3 by 3 meters. Saint Basil spent 15 years in prayer within this small church. On the rock beside it, you can see an icon of Saint Basil.
The relics of the Upper Monastery include a reliquary with the saint’s remains, a prayer book from 1732, and temple candlesticks dating back to 1779.
Ostrog is such a powerful spiritual site that words cannot fully convey the emotions felt by those who visit this sacred monastery!
