Skadar Lake Triр

We will visit Skadar Lake—one of the natural wonders of the Balkans, located on the border between Montenegro and Albania. The lake’s area ranges from 370 to 530 km² depending on the season, making it the largest in the Balkans. The average depth is around 5 meters, but in karst sinkholes, it reaches an impressive 60 meters.

We will embark on a boat trip across Skadar Lake, take plenty of stunning photos from the best angles, and, of course, stop for a swim. We will visit the authentic town of Virpazar and taste fish prepared according to a traditional local recipe.

Skadar Lake Trip – Excursion Route

Virpazar Town

We depart from the Montenegrin Adriatic coast to the uniquely authentic town of Virpazar! In the past, this was a major trading port, with caravan routes passing through. Merchants stopped here for rest and overnight stays, creating a bustling market. This is how Virpazar got its name: “Vir” means whirlpool, and “Pazar” means market.

Though centuries have passed, Virpazar has retained its charm and significance. Today, it serves as the main tourist hub of Skadar Lake.

Arriving in Virpazar, we will board a boat and embark on an exciting journey across the mirror-like surface of Skadar Lake.

Skadar Lake Trip

Skadar Lake

One theory suggests that the name “Skadar” comes from the Latin word "scutarii," meaning "protectors" or "protected place." This could be linked to a Roman legion stationed in the area during the late Roman period. This highlights the lake’s rich history and strategic importance through the centuries.

Additionally, the lake is a unique biosphere reserve, home to over 270 species of birds. Thanks to its biodiversity and cultural heritage, Skadar Lake has become a favorite destination for both nature lovers and history enthusiasts.

Skadar Lake is divided into two parts: "Big Lake" and "Small Lake." Our boat journey will take us through the bays and coves of "Big Lake," surrounded by the steep ridges of the Dinaric Alps, with traditional fishing villages along the shores, island monasteries, and untouched beaches.

We will marvel at the beauty and grandeur of Skadar Lake, as well as catch a glimpse of the shores of neighboring Albania. The lake serves as a natural border between Montenegro and Albania and belongs to both countries!

Moreover, Skadar Lake is the largest sanctuary for rare bird species in the Balkans, giving us a great chance to spot curly pelicans!

At the end of our journey, a delightful homemade fish dinner awaits us. We will taste fish from Skadar Lake and other delicacies prepared using authentic local recipes that have remained unchanged for centuries. After this delicious meal, we will return to the Adriatic coast.
