is one of the most popular excursions in the country. It offers the opportunity to see almost everything Montenegro has to offer in just one day while immersing yourself in the stunning landscapes and natural wonders of this unique destination.
One of the key reasons to take this tour is to witness Europe’s deepest canyon – the Tara River Canyon, which plunges to a depth of 1,300 meters. It is the second deepest canyon in the world and undoubtedly ranks first in natural beauty! The Grand Tour – Canyons of Montenegro is the most immersive way to experience Montenegro in a single day. Join us and see it all for yourself!
Leaving behind the azure coastline of the Montenegrin Adriatic and passing through the country’s capital, Podgorica, we will enter the heart of Montenegro. We will find ourselves in the majestic realm of the Dinaric Alps! Our journey will take us to the highest town — the administrative center of the Balkan Peninsula — Žabljak, which sits at an altitude of 1,456 meters above sea level. Žabljak is also a popular ski resort in Montenegro. On the western side, the town is surrounded in an amphitheater-like fashion by the Durmitor massif, which includes 48 mountain peaks, each rising over two kilometers high. Snow remains on the peaks of Durmitor throughout the summer, adding to the beauty of the unique mountain landscapes!
We will take a walk through Durmitor National Park to its gem — the enchanting Black Lake, surrounded by a relic pine forest, a glacial mountain lake. Durmitor is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is considered one of the most beautiful corners of the Balkans. Its highest point is the summit of Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m), from which, on clear days, breathtaking panoramas extend as far as Bosnia and even Albania.
The pristine Black Lake consists of two parts — the Big and Small Lakes, connected by a narrow channel that dries up in the drier months. Locals call it the "mountain eye" of Montenegro. The landscapes here are simply incredible! The fresh mountain air and the scent of Durmitor pines will leave no one indifferent.
Next, we will visit the unique marvel of Yugoslav engineering — the Djurdjevica Bridge, which blends seamlessly into the contours of the Tara River Canyon, the deepest canyon on the European continent! The Tara Canyon ranks as the second deepest canyon in the world, after the Grand Canyon in Colorado, USA. The contours of the Tara Canyon are quite different from those of the Grand Canyon, but the captivating beauty of nature, the emerald waters of the mountain river, and the height and sharpness of the Balkan mountains create an unforgettable impression! We will stop at the deepest point of the Tara Canyon and, of course, take a walk across the legendary Djurdjevica Bridge!
Next, we will descend to the Tara River, where the canyon walls, at times covered in pine trees and lush vegetation, rise ominously a thousand meters above the bubbling, crystal-clear mountain river, disappearing high into the sky. Words alone are not enough to capture the spectrum of colors, the taste of mountain air, and the overwhelming impressions of what we will see.
We will take our emotions to the fullest, stopping by the mountain river, considered one of the cleanest and most beautiful in Europe, in the very heart of the Tara Canyon. After this close encounter with the North of Montenegro, we will head back to the Adriatic coast.
